2012 Rack Crack

Post by Sullivj »

My 2012 has developed a small 2 inch crack in the plastic rack, which is hidden with the Top Case in situ.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I've been chatting with the guy who makes these and think I'll invest. It would hopefully stop the crack getting worse than it is now.

My 2012 Camhead has a small crack in the silver trim of the rack. It is possibly only cosmetic as the strength is probably in the black honeycomb structure beneath.

Looking at the Cymarc offering, from the photos, it may be designed for two functions.

1) To be used without the top case, for example say, with a roll sack or camping gear. Hence the six attachment points for tying stuff down.

2) The top case in the photo is fitted with a rack on the lid, again, adding additional load to the rack.

Just my thoughts but the product does look well manufactured as do other Cymarc products.

I have probably overloaded my top case before, which wouldn't have helped.

I always ride with the case in situ, so I wouldn't really see the plate. As it bolts directly to the honeycomb, it should provide some extra strength / support for the case.

I have the fitting instructions, so I'll take a look at those before I buy.

It probably doesn't help that the top cases do bounce around a little.
Two of the three Cymrac review comments' are, "now the top box hardly moves" and "top case is really safe now".

Looking at these photos and my own rack, I'm reasonably convinced that the crack is not substantially weakening the structure/strength of the rack.

My 52ltr top box bounces about but i put it down to it being a cheap box. For a piece of mind, i fixed an alloy rack plate made for a KTM 1250 Adv. Then bolted the top box plate to that. I also have a plate the same mounted as a box rack. My box is only used when touring and only holds my chain and padlock.
I've never heard of the BMW rack cracking. You're not overloading it? IRC there is a 5kg limit. Sure David will correct me if am wrong.
I will say my rack did have 2 marks that looked like cracks on the silver side bracket. They just turned out to be deep scratches
