Best All Around Tire For The RT

Post by Tenequip »

Hello

Just checked the RTs tires and not looking good! What do you fellows recommend for the RT? I have Michelin 5 GTs on it now and they only have 7500 miles and the best I could find was 3/16” of rubber @ the wear bars. A little gun shy with Michelin now.

The Road 6's wear better than the 5's, I've had 2's, 3's, 4's, 4GT's, and 5gt's, but I think the Road 6's are a good step up in longevity over the previous models.
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

I have the Road 6's on now and they seem to be doing OK

But I suppose it depends on what you want out of a tyre?

7500 miles is 12000 kilometers. I would be quite happy with that mileage on RT.

RT tyres are sport touring tyres and IMHO they are not supposed to last much longer.

If the use would be for example coast to coast riding then other type (=harder) might be better choice.

Tyres generally last me around 6 - 6.5k miles as I won’t go below 2mm, which tends to work out out quite nicely for the annual service.

I’m on 5GT’s at the moment with a set of 6GT’s due to be fitted in late May.

Hello

Ordered a set of Michelin Road 6 GTs today from the local motorcycle shop. I paid $520 and they will in the shop next Tuesday or Wednesday. Thought you fellows might be interested in what things cost in US. I will let you know how the tires are after I have them on for awhile.

If I recall correctly those Michelin Road 6 GTs were just under 600,- Euros locally with installation last year. That is about 100,- more than the Dunlops I bought - might try Michelins next time.

I bought mine from Twotyres at £332.92, and using my local BMW Specialist fitting will be about £50 including disposal of the old tyres

I just wore out a R6 rear tire at 6100 miles
I rode them hard, but was a little shocked that they wore out that quickly right down to the cords.

My Racetec 01 tyres are badly squared off, especially the front 5000 miles. Shame as there is plenty of tread left.Trying a set of Pirelli Angel GT next. Fingers crossed that they will last longer.

I would like to give a short review of my new tyres. I've just covered over the 1000 mile mark with the Pirelli Angles Gt. Standard MK1 front/ "A" rated rear. "A" spec = H/D
I am going to compare them to my last set of Racetec 01. These only got me 5000 miles before they flattened off.
1. The GT is a lot quieter than the 01.
2. Even with the "A" rated rear, the ride is a lot smoother but still taut.
3. I loved the Racetec for their overall grip but the GT surpass them, especially on fast corners.
4. The front GT MK1 tyre is a single compound. A bit old tech these days but it works. Some say the compound is the same as they use for the Rosso but with extra tread. The MK2 has dual compound but many have complained about the new center tramlines that make the handlebars shake.
5. The rear is dual compound
6. I've only driven for about 30 miles in a shower in France and they felt very secure even on the slippery village cobbles
7. They warm up quicker the Racetec with the heat wave we are having. Not had a chance to try them in cold weather yet.
8. Just over 1000 miles they show no signs of wear yet.
9. Cheaper than the Racetec. Both were delivered for £246. If you want the MK2 front add about £80 - £100 to the price.
10. How long do they last i don't know.
11. Would i buy them again? If they keep the above characteristics and last more than the 01. Yes

I have Pirelli Angel GT-A on my 2018 RT and have gone through two sets on my K1200GT before getting the RT. I have always felt they track and grip well and I sometimes push the tires pretty hard. I am much less concerned with miles from a tire than how secure the tire feels and probably replace them before I absolutely need to. To my way of thinking, the tires are the most important equipment for keeping the bike upright.

Dunlop Roadsmart IV. Getting about the same mileage as GT6s. I hate the rear GT6s as you really have no idea of tread left with the solid rubber center. I had to cut a trip short as still 1mm to wear bars but cord starting to show in center at one spot.

I’d rather throw my bike in the sea than ride with cords showing on a tyre !
