Travel insurance

Post by MikeS »

I know this has been covered countless times before but as things change thought worth asking.
Previously used the travel health insurance that came with my Nationwide account but looking through the small print it seems that they've gone down the 'only cover up 125cc ' route.
Which companies are people going with now for foreign cover?

Does the "only cover up to 125cc" refer to hire bikes. I seem remember (could be wrong), if you are riding from the UK on your own bike, you may be covered. Might be worth checking with the insurance provider.

I’ve used Nationwide Flexplus travel Ins for years, but your post prompted me to call for confirmation. We are indeed covered for our over 125cc bikes, and they are sending me a letter of confirmation.

Thanks, I'll go back and read it properly.

It’s not actually very clear, which is why I asked for the letter of confirmation.

From the nationwide policy document. Doesn't mention
hire bikes.

'Included Activities
You are covered to do the activities below on your trip.

Motorcycling (up to 125cc, crash helmet must be worn, and you must have a valid UK licence to ride the vehicle,
no cover under Personal Liability)'

I'll ring them as well, get a covering letter to stick in the policy documents.

Just tried a quote with Navigator for a week in September to France. Very reasonable, and strangely no questions about any existing health conditions.

They covered my 72 year old mate with heart problems for off road riding in Slovenia next month, albeit it cost him over £300. You may need to speak to them.

I just dwonloaded entire nationwide policy and read it. OMG, that's so boring. But I found this:
Section - Specific Exclusions (page 18/48)
9. Motorcycles, mopeds and scooters
Any claim as a result of you using any motorcycle, moped or scooter, if:
• You do not wear a crash helmet.
• You are in control of the vehicle and you do not hold a valid licence to drive that vehicle type in your home area.
• The vehicle is above 125cc and you did not use it to travel from your home area.
• You are not wearing appropriate protective clothing.

The statement above is quite clear for me. If you using your own motorbike for travelling, it is covered. If you renting, you can rent only up to 125cc.
