Thanks. Your factual approach to understanding it is far better than my speculation. It works pretty well most of the time but I think it’s important not to expect it to always hold firmly on even the steepest slopes. It is an aid and not fail safe.

Mine has always worked and never released early or unexpectedly just a few times I have been able to move the bike back with a push or if fully loaded then it has crept back but you can still tell the hill hold is on just not holding it firmly!
Since posting this I have flushed the rear brake fluid through which dislodged a couple of air bubbles and since then its been fine! Although I have been making a point of using the rear brake more and especially when stopping on a hill
