NEW TO THE SITE - IMPRESSED

I'm in the process of 'rationalising' )  my bikes and have both an F800ST & F650, CCM R30, plus numerous trials bikes ....... all except the CCM are going and I intend getting a 1200RT in the very near future.


Is there anything in particular I need to look for on the 1200RT?


I'll be getting a used one, 2012ish hopefully, with BMW service history


Having read the various posts there only seems to be a clunky gearbox and sporadic electrical problems, neither of which bother me, anything else?


I'm looking forward to getting to some meet ups this year, so I'll get to meet some members

My humble advice.
  Go for the latest edition you can find.  There is little or no technical differences from 2010 to 2013.  The Special Edition one done in 2013 are all black and include a colour matched top box with some nice colour changes to the bars etc. A top box is worth £500 +.
The LC 2014 onwards RT is in my opinion in a different league.

Having owned a 2010 SE Model for 4 years & covering 38,000 miles, (without any problems), I would certainly recommend one.

Recently changed it for a 2012 Model with 3,000 miles on the clock.

I personally prefer the Twin Cam over the latest 2014 LC Model, which is why I bought the 2012 bike.

If you are looking at possibly purchasing from a BMW Dealer, then their Approved Used Bikes site might help.

Sorry can't help on which one is best, but having had a few bikes in my great bikes. However, not compare with the 2014 1200RT LE it's awesome. All I can say is welcome to the forum.

The LC 2014 onwards RT is in my opinion in a different league.

Have to agree - it was only the arrival of the LC that persuaded me off my Multistrada...

The Bike which I Part Ex'd is up for £8,450, the Gross P/Ex Value is £6,850, that's £1,600 mark up.

I wonder how much it will be in the sale, gives you an example & some idea of where to start from with any negotiations on price, particularly if you don't have a Part Ex yourself.

I've been  very happy with my 2012. The only problems I've run into were both right and left side switches which is a known issue, and the Dealer switched those out quickly and without any drama. My battery only lasted 3 years but no big deal either.


It's only my opinion but I looked at and could have had a great deal on a 14 Wethead buyback. I declined as thought my 2012 was a much nicer bike. Good luck with your search, there should be lots of them around as plenty of guys jumped onto the latest and greatest bandwagon.

Good to see the issues you are having regards changing bikes.  I'm convinced correct decisions are best made with a good test ride in my opinion without a dealer shadow behind you.  No issues here, I had a good 30 or 40 minute test ride on a demo 2015 R1200RT here in Perth (Australia) and the bike was a must have, no doubt about it.  Another league, try one is all I can say.  It's an investment in pure pleasure after all.  I stepped off a 2013 Moto Guzzi 1200 4V Corse without looking back and it was in its self a brilliant bike but the comfort and road manner of the RT is awesome.  I'll be watching to see what you finally decide on, good luck and like myself enjoy this forum.

The Anniversary model is great and was a great deal at the time with the amount of extras that were part of the deal, that's why I got one rather than waiting for the 2014 model.
