Wiring in Innov dashcam

Post by BigBaldBiker »

Hi

I am looking to install an innov dashcam that I have purchased. It has three wires for power, two go straight to the battery +&- terminals and the other needs to pick up a switched live.

Since the accessory sockets are switched on with the ignition and the rear one is already exposed as I am running the lines for the camera I thought it might be a good idea to splice into the positive lead to this

Two questions 1) is this a good idea or will I get into trouble with something by doing this ? I don't think the camera will draw much power. 2) If this is a good idea how do I determine which is the positive lead, I am colourblind but my wife tells me one lead is brown and the other red/green which has me stumped

Any better suggestions out there ?

The bike is a 2015 RT1200LE

Thanks in advance

Hi

Yes the set up you suggest would work. As for colours you can always test each wire with a test bulb to earth

Hi and welcome to the forum

Yes that would work fine as for the live connection I would expect red/green would be live

But it's best to check with a multimeter if you can

Thanks both

Will break into the wires and test with multimeter before proceeding

Hi

The wires plug into the back of the aux socket so you can just unplug to test

I installed these on my previous 2022 R1250 GSA and contacted Innov directly, they were amazingly helpful and talked me through the installation which was not aligned with comments from others who had installed the cameras. The Innov team are absolutely great to deal with and talked me through a connection problem whilst I was at my bike.

Wishing you all the very best and can only recommend connecting with the knowledge base of Innov as a first port of call.

No disrespect to others intended.

Hi, How have you got on fitting the INNOV?

I’m looking to fit one to my 2021 RT. So any hints on where you took the live and switched live from and routing of wires would be much appreciated.

I’ve seen a chap in Germany on YT (nothing to prove) who shows an available connecter by the left hand speaker pod, just wondering if it would work to connect to this so as to not disturb any wires and invalidate my warranty….

Thanks all.

Please someone correct if I’m wrong here, as I understand it, you need to connect the red and black wires to the battery or permeant live and the yellow to switched live.

This will allow for movement recording after the the ignition is switched off. The switched live obviously comes into play when the ignition is switched on and not draw directly from the red lead on the battery.

So, fitting the thunderbox, did you connect all three to that or just the yellow?

Thanks for you help and input Glenn….

Hi Gary,
Your R,B,Y wiring assumptions are correct.
When I fitted my K3 I took the yellow to the +ve supply of the DIN socket by the rear seat.
Hope that helps.

From the Thunderbox manual

Operation modes
The ThunderBox can operate in three different modes. Depending of the connection of the
WHITE control wire the following modes can be acquired:
› Automatic mode:
The White control wire is left disconnected/unused.
When the engine is started and runs evenly, the TB switches the outputs ON.
When the engine is stopped, after a few seconds the TB switches the outputs OFF.
› Ignition-controlled mode:
The White control wire is connected to an ignition key switched +12V power source, e.g.
to the hot wire of the number plate light or running light.
The TB will switch the outputs ON/OFF (with a few seconds delay) following the ignition
key switch position.
› Stay-off mode:
The White control wire is connected to the TB’s Black wire terminal block
(either directly or via an on/off switch).
The TB will keep the outputs OFF even if the engine is running.

My white wire is disconnected so auto mode.
