Hi all, I recently purchased a 2016 R1200RT LC with 60,000km and full BMW service history, I took it out today for the first time and the bike seems to run fine, Neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd was a bit clunky which I believe is fairly common but 3rd 4th 5th 6th and back down especially using the shift assist was super smooth and works really well, I noticed that the oil level was too high in the sight glass and so drained off 60ml approx until the level was correct according to the owners manual, looking at the oil I drained off I noticed some fine metal particles (nothing too nasty) according to the last service invoice the oil was changed in January 2024 at 58000km. My question is would this to be expected in a bike with a wet clutch and shift assist as I've only ever seen some metal particles in a first oil change on a new engine.
thanks for any advise.
New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
Re: New to me R1200RT LC 2016 oil question
Hi, thanks for your reply, I contacted my local Bmw motorrad dealership and have scheduled a service which they have confirmed is an intermediate one as last major service was carried out at 56000km, this will keep my service record up to date and continued Europe wide breakdown cover for a further 12months (I plan to do an Alpine trip late spring 2025) I had one other question, I've been out on the bike a few times now and am very impressed at how it handles for such a large bike through the twisties far more chuckable than my Honda Blackbird. Back to my question.....the motor is very quiet and smooth on start up from cold but after a decent run when it's up to full operating temp I have a fair amount of gearbox chatter which disappears once the clutch lever is engaged, do you know if this is typical of this model ?
cheers.

Normal for some clutch rattle. I wouldn't worry. If you have slipping or finding it very hard to select gears then it's a possibility it needs a new clutch kit.
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.

My 2016 rattles until you pull the clutch in
Clutch rattle is pretty normal across a lot of bikes
