New to me 2009 1200 RT Scary noise.

Post by dubepj »

Just bought a 2009 R1200RT. When bike is warmed after a few miles ride I hear a scary chartering noise when in neutral. I pull in the clutch and noise demises quite a bit.
Will I be looking a a $3000 repair.

If the motorcycle has a BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty, possibly not, as some clutch parts are covered.

OK
Quite sure no warranty on this bike. I'm going to remove the clutch Slave cylinder to see if the rattle could be caused by the worn out felt packing or a worn out push rod.
I need to remove the rear shock to do this
ANY rips??

What mileage has the motorcycle done and does it have an up to date service history.

My 2012 Camhead RT has done 52K miles, there is a rattle which goes away when the clutch lever is pulled in and comes back when the lever is released. At 10K miles, I asked the BMW dealer to check it, "when warmed up, all is ok." I think this problem is not helped if the motorcycle is stood unused for a period of time. With regular use the rattle doesn't seem to exist.

This video, for a GS suggests that the clutch rattle could be caused by the pushrod/felt.

The rear shock absorber needs to be removed to fully extract the pushrod.
