Duration of RT Ownership

I've now owned my current 2012 Camhead which was new (pre-owned) to me in 2014 for 10 years.

Vote in the poll to show how long have you owned yours for.

I have no desire or intention to change mine, it's a keeper. It's been well documented that I prefer the Camhead over any of the later models.

What model/year have you got, for what reason(s) do you keep yours and/or, what determines when you change it for another model.

Eight and half years now for my 2011 RT. I only keep it as a winter hack because it's not worth much. I've had 3 GS's in that time (far superior bike) but might be tempted with a 1300 RT when they come out.

just over 3 years for mine! I can't see me getting rid of it and any other bike will just be mine while the RT will become a bike for me and the wife!

I submitted 1 year, even though it's only been a fortnight.

Came off a 2019 1250GS, I love the 1250 engine and dynamic ESA. This time I wanted a brand new bike for my 60th birthday (treated myself, no rich relatives!). I do about 10,000 miles a year on my main bike, mainly winding / mountain routes on tours. Not a lot of motorway work. I also ride 4-5,000 locally on classic bikes (1970s). I ride throughout the year. So, my main bike needed to be comfortable, good weather protection, good for luggage, but engaging and sporty when pushed. Despite being 6 foot, I find the GSA too tall and the R and RS probably not right for long tours. Hence the RT.

I know some will be unhappy with this comment, but for me at least, the older RTs just didn't have it, there were better bikes around for less money, the more modern ones however, thinking 1250 onwards, brought an old and ailing motorcycle back from the brink

I'm on my 3rd RT in 3 years, started with a 2011 R1200RT, found a 2018 R1250RT with low mileage, so the R1200RT was part ex for a small profit. The R1250RT was involved in a RTC and written off (3rd party admitted liability). Now on a 2019 R1250RT. I prefer the analogue clocks on my bike to the newer TFT models.

For what reason(s) do you keep yours and/or, what determines when you change it for another model.

To answer this, I had a 2007 Hexhead for 3 years, it had done 39K miles. In 2010, I took voluntary redundancy from work and with 3 months lieu of notice cash, decided to treat myself to a new Camhead. In 2014, I was planning on getting a new Wethead but on viewing it, was underwhelmed. Later that year, had a test ride on a Wethead, this convinced me that it wasn't a motorcycle for me. With the 2010 Camhead having 36K miles on it after 4 years and not liking the Wethead, decided to change it for my current 2012 which was pre-owned with 3K miles on it. Being able to have an Insured Warranty up to 80K miles at the start of the policy gives some comfort in owning a 12 year old motorcycle.

Had mine for 5 years (and a bit) from new. 42k miles now but would have been more if not for Covid. Tend to change bikes at this age/mileage. At the moment there's nothing I want from BMW, been waiting for the 1300RT but no sign yet.
Bikes becoming problematic with starting issues and needing a new remote key so seriously considering a NT1100 especially that
Honda has now has updated it. Chain drive but its not the end of the world.

Added my vote, another owner for 8 years + and 45k miles !
It’s all a matter of opinions isn’t it, and it’s my opinion, that I’ve got the best model in the best colour
I’ve owned a Twin Cam (2013) and I’ve ridden a few thousand miles on 1250’s, on BB duty, from that, I’ll add that I think the best engine was probably the TC, but it’s a very ugly bike compared to the wetheads, I’ve also found the 1250’s to be a noisy engine compared to my 1200, along with the problems with TFT and connectivity.

I’ve no plans to change my 2012. It does all I need it to do and more.

On my second RT got the first one new in 2016 (1200LE ) bought this one new Jan 23 (1250 LE)

Not used this one as much due to no longer needing to commute everyday to an office. Hope to have more time for riding next year as Im supposed to be working part time now ( Being a miserable old git )
