North East 250 (Scotland)

Post by David. »

Recently came across a link to the North East 250 (in Scotland), https://www.northeast250.com/see-the-ro ... OS4wLjAuMA..

Have created a BaseCamp circular route from Ballater which is 220 miles. The start/finish point is 30 miles away on the A93, just south of the Devil's Elbow Viewpoint which would make it 250 miles.

Haven't done much around the NE of Scotland, might be one for the future.

Have found the route in my Garmin Basecamp collection.

If you can organise the weather, I'd "consider" doing it.

I spent 12 years up at Kinloss in the 80's & 90's, get off the main roads and it's great touring

I think next year would be worth looking at, I'm in central Scotland, and unless it stays dry for several days now the roads are staying damp to wet. I don't see this changing much till next year, so I'll be restricting my trips to more local roads and where I can do a run without any planning to take advantage of any breaks in the weather.

If anyone has the gpx file I'd be happy to have a look at it ;)

Well it's attached

I downloaded it and opened it up in MyRoute-app and it had a few waypoints

It only showed straight lines though but that's down to it not being re calculated by MyRoute-app

When sharing routes, I find that it's best to keep them in the Garmin BaseCamp .gdb format and email to each other.

Converting to/using alternative route planning software usually screws them up.

Can you make any sense/use of this MyRoute-app route, https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/motor-and ... Cairngorms

That's because you're not using enough waypoints

Each software has its own way of calculating routes and this includes basecamp depending on how the user has it set

Not everyone uses basecamp so not everyone would be able to use a route from it

Putting plenty of waypoints in avoids route differences and exporting to gpx means anyone that wants to use it will get the same route

Best way if sharing routes for a ride out so everyone has the same route

I'm using enough waypoints and shaping points in Garmin BaseCamp to create my bespoke route and use it successfully with my Garmin Zumo 660.

If I join the 2 routes to create the full NE 250, then create a track, the track has 3,531 points.

if you want to share routes you need to think others and their needs

Not everyone uses basecamp and not everyone uses garmin

If you want to create a route that everyone and everything can use then waypoints is the way to go not shaping points and not garmins own format.

I regularly create routes for use on 3 different garmin 3 tomtoms 1 bmw navigator and 1 other app depending on what he is using at the time. All my routes work on all these devices without differences using waypoints
