It's that time of year a bit cold and guess what battery does not want to play.

If the bike is still covered under a BMW warranty with roadside assistance (or other organisation),  get them to come out to start the bike and check the battery voltage at the same time. This will help to determine the state of the battery and if serviceable, the choice of battery charger going forward.

Its that time of year a bit cold and guess what battery does not want to play , not being up with modern technology can you use any battery charger on your motorcycle ? , also can i charge it in place on my 2019 RTLE ? or because of all the bells and electrickery these days does it have to be removed from the bike .

I charge mine in place via a socket wired direct to the battery.I don't have electricity in my garage so use an Optimate DC-DC run from a leisure battery and it works a treat.No effect on the bikes electronics what so ever.

That's different, what size is the leisure battery and how long does it last when charging via the Optimate DC-DC.

Here's all the gumph on top of the battery,can be charged 200 times and lasts around 10 weeks.This is the 1st use in winter so I've raised ghe battery of the ground and wrapped some insulation around it.The DC-DC is a smart bit of kit and does a fantastic job.

The battery was around £90 with the Halford's card and yes,i recharge the battery around 10 weeks.The DC-DC won't suck the leisure battery dead,i will keep an eye on the battery over the colder months as i suspect it will run down quicker.I might just take the battery of the bike if that's the case.

Reading all the info on charging, I have an Energiser (supposedly intelligent) trickle charger for my 2009 R1200RT. It works fine when you take the seat up and attach the clamps.
My mate with a GS (with loads of extra power draining gadgets) told me to plug it straight into the aux. power output in the fairing. Got a din plug attachment and it wouldn't work. Doesn't charge.
Is this just because I have a shit charger?
Do I just need to bite the bullet and buy one of those suggested in previous threads?

I would stick to what you have if it works fine and fit some pigtails to the battery so you can plug it in easier

Although if you're not confident it's an intelligent charger you might not want to leave it plugged in permanently and you might want to replace it if that's what you're intending to do

That looks fine, just bolt the O-ring terminals to the battery and use the SAE connector for more convenience.
