Shell Motorcycle Oil

Post by Levisp »

Understand that BMW Motorcycles are going over to Shell as their OEM oil for 2015. As far as I can see Shell don't at the moment have a 5W40 oil spec required for LC engine bikes, so how is that going to work. Has anybody heard anything. Just curious.

Funny you should bring this up.  Story broke late last year, I think in Italy.  My dealer confirmed the story.  However last week when I asked "where's all the Shell then", they didn't know or wouldn't tell.  So as of today in sunny Derbyshire its still Castrol.

Still Castrol round here. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully they will make a 5W40 oil, supply it in 4 litre containers at a reasonable price. Silly me its BMW probably come in half litre bottles and at a crazy price.

Probably the same price and again only available from dealers. 5-40 is used in all water cooled Series bikes  now less the Fs so until Shell make it dont expect to see any.

The LC Rider's Manuals says, "BMW Motorrad recommends Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2".

Shell do make a 5W-40 motorcycle oil, (branded for Scooters), with a specification (API SM, JASO MB), which exceeds the BMW recommendation & that of the Castrol oil.

It will be interesting to see what Shell come up with, does anyone have a BMW or MINI car, if so, has anything changed at your local car Dealer.

Looks like if you wish to follow BMW's latest recommendation of 15W-50 for the Twin Cam Models, then Shell offer Advance Ultra, API SM and JASO MA2.

My dealer here in WI is fully stocked with the Shell Oils. Just picked some up yesterday. Here's a photo of the new bottle.
