I have always been reluctant to put things around the jugs, for the same reason I would be reluctant to install this crud-catching thingie.

I suspect that, when you put those cylinder protection covers or this crud eliminator, you block air flow unto the engine. And I am guessing that designers count on the aerodynamic of air flow around the engine as a cooling factor...I am just guessing but I am gonna go with my intuition on this one

Here's a good option on the fender extender front....

But $80 for a piece of plastic seems pretty high.  I looked a few different places but can't seem to find a similar one (one that is as long) for a better price.

Machine art is one i use, worth the money. No drilling holes and good size. Dont think will fit on 1250 though.

MAM has modified their fender extender to fit the 1250 and the 1200. It is different from the original 1200 fender extender.

I've had both versions of the Machine Art Moto fender extender, on R1200RT and R1250RT bikes. The 1250 version, with the scooped-out rear section fits both 1200 and 1250 bikes. The original version fits the R1200RT only.

I think it's the best extender on the market currently, but could still be a little bit longer for maximum protection of the lower engine case.

I personally would not buy a thing from China.

But as BMW sell cylinder protection covers (fitted on my bike as a factory option) they are by definition OEM so surely the airflow will be as the designers intended?

::) "...as designers intended..."    you have the kind of trust in modern manufacturing that I don't.

Design of anything in manufacturing nowadays is driven by marketing (particularly on motorcycle aftermarket parts); the guys who don't give a sheetta about any other issue other than profit.
