Thank you for your email.

There are currently no recalls or quality enhancements outstanding on your bike. The shaft vent campaign has only been released on GS and GSAs so this wont be released on your bike.

Thinking out loud here I could see that the shaft rotation could cause pressure due to heat which could push air out past the gaiters.

Then when it cools would then cause a vacuum which is what could be bringing in moisture

As for the valve and if its one way or not god knows! Without getting hold of a valve and studying it we would all be guessing

Ideally it needs to be two way to allow air in when the vacuum happens

That's my theory anyway

If you believe BikeSocial at Bennetts (and I don't), "the update only applies to the GS and to rare ‘official use’ versions of the R1200RT and R1250RT – the sort sold to police or perhaps blood bike services."

Possibly why a "civvy" RT isn't included.

I know someone with a pre-Oct 21 GS and his requires the shaft vent valve retrofitting.

I'm guessing from this photo that it's one way and BikeSocial say it is, so, it's got to be true.

"All get a vent hole drilled into the lowest point of the shaft drive assembly’s outer case, and bunged with a rubber one-way valve that allows water to be drained from inside without letting water in."

This photo shows a 2022 GS where the vent valve has disappeared inside the swing arm. (Might have been sucked in under vacuum).
Doesn't look like a very secure solution and this was factory fit. (Now it's a two way valve).

Apparently, the shafts are being replaced on LC 1200's & 1250's because during the design and manufacturing process, the swing arm and final drive unit has been fitted on the wrong side of the bike. Unlike the pre-LC vintage bikes which don't suffer from this particular problem.
