Transalp 700 and Vstrom 650 both get good reviews, but might be a bit small for bigger trips.
I would test ride a new style Africa Twin.
Not sure how my ego would cope with Transalp or Vstrom!

I'd go for a new style Africa Twin. It will feel light, it's powerful enough, looks nice, and there's hardly any around compared to all the other bikes, especially the "Charley-Farley Touratech Adventure brigade".

Over the last two months I have been in two tours in the company of 2 Multistradas. one being the latest Endure. Both were fully kitted out and with a million. Altogether the mileage was approx. 2200. Not a blip from either if them and the Enduro managed a better mpg than my RT. Ugly bugger though. Understand its now up for sale.
I am in same boat, but for different reasons, as you.
The GS is too high for me.
I had an Aprillia Caponord TP before the RT and in many ways it was a super ride, the suspension was fantastic.However the Vtwin is an acquired taste.
Before that I had a Kawasaki Z1000SX - old model. A super bike but the panniers (Givi V35's) looked ridiculous.
The new Tourer model has cured this.
Last of all is the Yamaha Tracer - the addition of soft skin panniers make it into a Tourer.
Other than that and the AT - not much choice.
