The Workshop at York, a VAT registered garage charges £48 + VAT = £57.60 per hour.

So they have only charged me for 35 mins labour then!! Jesus!

The BMW oil filter is £17.06, the Hiflo replacement is HF160, Hiflofiltro: Catalogue which can be purchased from MSG Bike Gear for £6.26, Hiflo HF160 Oil FIlter– MSG Bike Gear postage free. MSG should order one if not in stock.

The oil is a little more difficult to find at a good price but based on using Motul, found this, Motul 104087 7100 4T 5W-40 4L Fully synthetic Engine Oil : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive works out at £19.07 less than the BMW stuff and is fully synthetic.

That's a saving of £29.87 on parts.

OK that's what I guessed. Should that AW of 3 be added to the AW 5+2 for labour.

Building a relationship with the dealer, which pays dividends when buying clothing and goodies with 10 - 12% discount.
Finally getting the bike washed as I can never be bothered

Yeah, I'll bet they love seeing you pulling up on their forecourt with your bag of crush washers and a gallon of Castrol GTX

Only one crush washer and 4 litres of Motul 5100 4T 15W-50 required plus a Hiflo oil filter for the sum of £30.50.

At 50p, the BMW crush washers are the same price as those from Wemoto.

I can recall having a service carried out at the same BMW dealer that David refers to (well I think it is) and having had 4 litres of the previously BMW recommended oil (they used to change the recommended brand every 6 months in those days !!) on my shelf I asked if I could supply my own oil. "No problem, just leave your oil in the Top Case" which I did. After picking up my bike and arriving back home I found that my own oil was still in the Top Case, unused. I checked my bill to find that I had not been charged for the oil they had used. Being an honest chap I rang the dealer and explained what they had done. "No problem, forget about it, enjoy your bike". Obviously that was the start of a good Dealer / Customer relationship. Unfortunately the particular Service Manager involved is no longer with that BMW Dealership.

After purchasing some new seals for the rear brake caliper, I wanted a small quantity of BMW brake fluid for topping up. The minimum size bottle on the shelf in the parts dept. was 1 litre. The very nice man could see that I didn't need that quantity and gave me the bottle FOC. I always ask for and get 10% discount on any other parts too. This only goes to show the value of building up a relationship with a dealer. But also, if they can afford to give stuff away, what profit are they making on the other items sold.

Or, pay BMW £82.63 for oil & filter and £96.00 per hour for labour, when a VAT registered independent charges £57.60, the choice is yours.

The savings on parts & labour would pay for 2 months Insured Warranty at 35.00 GBP per month.

Thanks, as Sakm proved only charged £46.66 for labour I will book in soon at main dealer for competent  thorough service and enjoy free biscuits and coffee and a free wash to boot. No brainer really, Happy days.

For me, the savings made by providing my own oil & filter will more than cover the dealer labour cost.

By the looks of it you get charged an AW of 5 for any service work Plus the additional costs per item
