With a "Spare set of Keys" for the Bike being mentioned, what other "Essential Kit" do you carry.

As a starter for 10, this is the check list I use, (excluding documents already listed).

Emergency tyre sealant + Compressor
Map/hard copy of route (Sat Nav)
Torch x 2 (check batteries)
Mobile phone
Mobile phone charger (Bike + Mains)
Bike tool kit
Cable ties
Gaffer tape
Camera (batteries/charger/memory card)

Spare keys (swap with one another)

Spare bulbs (needed in Germany)

Crikey - no wonder the RT top box is so big!!

It all fits on the bike or in the tank bag, top case is for luggage or lids.

One reason for not getting a LC RT, more storage space on the Twin Cams.

I think the new panniers are slightly bigger.  I still use my old soft type inners in mine and they are a loose fit compared with my last RT Top bix is the same size but half the weight empty as are the side panniers.

Holy crap Batman......so all that kit is for an 'Around the world trip' right  !!!

I always try to travel lean and light.

Without a radio on a Twin Cam, the "Glove Box" holds a load of stuff & the underseat/tail piece space is good too.

Most of the kit is on the bike all of the time.

That is some list, but the reality is if we all made a list of what we think we would need in the worst scenario we hope webwould be carrying the answer. I didn't notice any water though or an energy drink or Mars bar, etc. it's a really good list which I will be following now as a starting point, thanks

There is about £200 difference in the price between the old and new cases depending if you go for the central locking option.  However the 2014 version is very much lighter than the old one and of course you can fit it with a brake light. .

Don't believe everything you read.  I think they have got the weights reversed.  Having owned both the new one, even with the very large 1600GTL back rest on is much lighter. Lid is also fitted with gas struts as oppose to a bit of string and the locking system to attach it to the bike is internal so possibly less prone to some scum attacking it. Having looked at the BMW site they are quoting 10kg for the new one ie 22 lbs.  So its  the weight of the old one that is wrong.

Yes, it looks like BMW have got it wrong, this Parts Catalogue is also quoting 8 kg or 17.5 lbs for the old top case.

Perhaps a call to a local friendly BMW Parts Dept. will clarify the situation.

Well BMW USA have anyway. You have one, how about weighing it?

I have just mounted the Wolfman Ranier Tank Bag on the bike. In it I keep:
tire plugger and pump
Flashlight and a couple chem-lights
extra batteries for the Spot locator
2 bungee cords (medium)
maybe a camera,maybe not
GoPro sometimes
bike tool kit
small cable ties
first aid kit in the back pouch
glasses in the side pouches
extra gloves in the front pouch
electrical tape
charger for phone and helmet speaker system
tire gauge
wallet and phone when I'm riding
model 442 smith and wesson
When I stop the wallet, phone, and 442 go with me
documents in the doc pouch
maps in map case
metal plate for side stand
Ann's small purse and hair brush when she is with me
I keep rain gear in the side bag most of the time, when we are packed for a big trip rain gear and some small things go on the rack on the top case


Why do you carry spare bulbs only in Germany?
Why the breathalyzer?
What is a headlight converter?
Are 'mains adapters' what I would call fuses?

Hi David,  just weighed my 2012 - 49lt BM  top box and the scales read 19 .5 lbs  ?  (of course empty ) :-\
