Stalling issues

Post by slowvet »

For the second time in a month and a half my '11 rt has stalled, flamed out while coasting up to a stop sign to make a  right hand turn. Weird. Clutch in and coasting. It starts right back up but it shouldn't be happening. Also it will burble and hesitate every once in a while I blip the throttle before leaving a stop light. What in the hell?

Don't approach stop signs or turn Right  -  open up the  throttle and  keep straight on, or turn Left only    :alas:

When the twin cam first came out they had a recall for just your problem. Bike would suddenly stall.  A small replacement part I recall on valve gear fixed the problem.  Contact any dealer who can quickly check if your bike is an effected one.  If so its a quick warranty job to fix.

Was that a Cam Sensor modification.

Probably, cant quite remember.  Once had a stack od them in a plastic bag, looked like a big washer with a small lug on it.  Original ones had no lug.

This looks like the Cam Sensor trigger in position on the Camshaft Sprocket.

Removing the RHS Valve Cover will reveal whether or not this replacement part has been fitted.

Called the service tech today and explained what was happening. I think I'm facing an up hill battle. I didn't mention recall, was hoping he would have said or mentioned what RTman wrote above. Would the problem come up in a code check? I plan on taking it for a long ride tomorrow on some back roads and see if it stalls when I randomly coast up to some stop signs. I also mentioned the off idle throttle belch/burble when I'm sitting at a stop light when I give the throttle an 1/8 turn blip. His reply, don't blip the throttle....at all. And Selyn, I heard that! ;)

A 2011 Bike with 12,000 miles, what's the Service History, 12K Service Schedule:- https://www.ascycles.com/pdf/ServiceSch ... ervice.pdf

Valve Clearances, Spark Plugs, Air Filter & Engine Synchronisation (Throttle Valves) may all effect the Engine performance.

The Independent BMW Trained Senior Technician I have used, told me that he could tell if the Throttle Valves needed balancing by the feel of the Throttle response.

(My 2010 Model didn't have the Recall).

Don't think the bike would show a fault code but I don't understand why they cant check it out for any recall history.  It costs them nothing and takes all of 60 seconds to do. I assume you are dealing with a BMW dealer. You could always take DaygloDavid's advice and have a  look.

Hi Slowvet,  are you able to remove the  cover and look at that Cam Sensor trigger in position on the Camshaft Sprocket, as shown in DaygloDavids  photo.  Or perhaps print it off for your Dealer to do and check for you  ?,
Hope you can get it sorted .      ;)
