Hi,
I'm in Thailand with one month 2015 RT (ESA). The ride before the fist service was perfect. After 1,000 on odo. I felt that the rear suspension getting too stiff eventhough I set it to one helmet with comfort. Just found out that without switch on the ignition the rear suspension is very stiff (like hard tail bike), not sure if its normal for ESA?.
Cheers,
Tor

Hi Tor
welcome to the forum.

Your RT is perfectly normal. The ESA only operates when the ignition is ON, so when the the ignition is OFF, the suspension wont work.

Hi Pope,
Thanks for reply, I didn't notice that when I got the bike. Also confused with my friend's R1200GS LC with Dynamic ESA, without the ignition the suspension still work. I felt that the new RT suspension is quite stiff compare to the old RT.

Bring bike back to the dealer, they found something wrong with the rear shock absorber. Will replace with the new one but they have to order from Germany.  :not:  Might be the fist 2015 RT that have this problem.

What you described, did sound a bit strange, if in doubt, take it to your local friendly BMW Dealer, who always knows best.

My understanding is that the ESA sets the spring pre-load & damping on the rear shock absorber, not mechanically fixes it, (like a hard tail).

Might be worth asking your dealer what the build date is for your bike.  You might not be aware that early LC RTs (March to June 2014) were all recalled for just that problem.

This BMW VIN Decoder, http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html, can be used to find the "Production Date" of your Bike.

Model year 2015 saw a number of model facelift measures. The models could be ordered from all BMW Motorrad dealers in the new configuration from August 2014.

BMW R 1200 RT.

As of model year 2015, the R 1200 RT will be supplied in a new two-colour paint finish.

New two-colour paint finish San Marino blue metallic/ Granite grey metallic matt.

Definitely 2015 model in that colour.  Looks like you have just been a bit unlucky. No doubt your dealer will sort it.

Using the VIN Decoder will give the "Production Date".

Typically, in this thread, http://www.1200rt.com/index.php/topic,1178.0.html, from Production to Registration has been around 3 weeks in the examples given.

It would be interesting to know about a bike outside of UK/EU.
