Conti Tire Recall - check your front Tire

Post by Pope »

BMW did a recall on certain bikes fitted with certain Conti front tires, However, they seem to have forgotten the RTLC's.
Now yesterday I happened to notice my front tire blistering and delaminating, so its now in the hands of my local dealer.

The RTLC tire effected are certain 120/70ZR17 M/C (58W) TL ContiRoadAttack 2 GT

My Sept 2014 is fine.
Last four digits are 1814.
Outside the recall range.

A big "oops" here.
Thanks to David for pointing out the error of my ways.
I had mis-read the info.
It affects tyre up to the 26 week in 2014. As mine is the 18th week, it comes within the recall.
Hopefully sort it with Chester tomorrow morning.
A check of the tyre doesn't show anything abnormal.

Thanks for this info. I wonder wether this is the cause of my longstanding concerns about the continentals on my LC. I'll certainly be checking mine this morning.

All booked into Chester Motorrad for Tuesday 12th May. Tyre looks fine at present but will keep an even closer eye on it.
Surprised that the dealer that supplied the bike has not been in contact..

Seems odd.  Recalls are issued directly by  BMW not the dealer.  Maybe the tyres were not original fit ones?

Can't see why they're not original fit.
Bike was first registered September 14 and I bought it early December 14.

Assuming tyres normally last somewhere between 4 and 6K what was its mileage when you bought it.  Hope your packed, 3 weeks today you will be 1000 miles south.

It had about 1500 miles on the clock. It's now just over 4k. I was wondering whether to change them before Austria because of he mileage that we'll be doing.
The problem is I'm not 100% happy with the continentals.
I don't know exactly what it is but i don't have the confidence in them that I had with the battlax on my Pan.
It could just be me.
I did fancy the Pirelli Angle GTs but I'll have to check whether they supply them in the correct sizes for the RT.

As you have a new front one I would just replace the back with a matching Conti.  I wouldn't set off for Austria with 4K on the back one.  2 up for another 2500 miles is asking a lot. Mine has z8s. Stable as a rock.

The Conti's are great tires.
Even though I had a faulty front tire. It still performed brilliantly during its 8000mile life.

So I'm staying with the Conti's until thus new set are finished, then I might try something else.

Hi Pope - Did you get 8000 miles out of your rear as well as your front. I ask because being new to "Sport Tourers" i have no experience of tire life and next month will be going on hols expecting to do around 2800 miles on top of the 4000 i presently have.
I have checked with my dealer about my front and mine doesn't  require replacement. Although the date falls within period the middle 4 digit number doesn't match.

Hi Bertie

No, i managed to just squeeze 6000 miles from my rear Conti, but i probably should have changed it 500 miles sooner, as it was badly squared off due to lots of Motorway use.

So asking almost 7000 miles from your rear, might be asking too much. However, it all depends how you ride.

I tend to ride aggressively and accelerate hard, plus i do lots of high speed motorway miles.

Thanks, I ride fast progressive but fairly smoothly, try to avoid motorways. It looks like it will be borderline it has 4mm at present. Was it down to the wear bars or close to illegal when you changed it?
