Front Wheel removal Twin Cam

Hi,


Please appreciate I'm a mechanical luddite, hence the question.


I'm also tight and after very nearly having heart failure the last time I replaced my PR4's I've now bought a set online to get fitted locally. I've just watched the MAX BMW rear wheel removal vid and that seems straight forward. Unfortunately I can't find any info on removal of the front wheel. Is that equally straightforward?, is there anything to be mindful of and do I need and other BMW specific tools other than my torque wrench and torx bits. I don't have a users manual to hand, on my list to rectify :-)

If my memory serves me right, that video suggests that with the front wheel out, the bike will tip nicely into the rear wheel......IT DOESNT! You will need a front end paddock stand or jack and chock the engine block!


Once you've secured the bike into the back wheel, removal is pretty simple!


Remove the front mudguard panel....screws removed it pulls away upward with a bit of persuasion.
Undo brake calliper bolts from the right hand (as sitting on the bike) side and suspend the calliper with an electric hook or similar.
You'll need a 22mm removal tool or I use a box spanner that fits nicely into the end of the axle.
Loosen/remove the clamp bolt then you can remove the axle by unscrewing, the normal RH thread.


Ensure you know where the spacers come from and support the wheel as you remove the axle.


Not difficult! And refitting is the reverse of removal.


Main thing......secure the bike on the back wheel before you start!

I use a Scissor Jack, similar to this one https://www.cromwell.co.uk/KEN5035920K, secured to the "Bash Plate" mount at the front of the sump,
to raise/support the front of the Bike in conjunction with the Centre Stand.

Removing both the RHS & LHS Brake Calipers, allows the wheel to be removed more easily.

As above, a Wheel Spindle Key like this one http://www.mandp.co.uk/default/catalogs ... /?q=539432, is also required.

Removing the Wheels on a GS is much the same, http://www.r1200gs.info/garage/wheels.html, hopefully this will give you some idea of what's involved.

Thanks all for the prompt and useful tips, I've ordered the wheel spindle key and will give it a go in a few weeks, once I've eked out the remaining miles in this pair
