Hi
I have just bought a 2005 RT from a private seller, the bikes rides perfect and is in great condition, it's done 28k miles and has a full BMW service history but....
One night I noticed a light was on in the garage, when I checked I noticed half of the backlights on the clocks of the RT were on ! The ignition was in off position and key in the kitchen.. It's only the Rev counter and just the needle on the mph side of the clocks that are lit.
I took the bike to my local BMW dealer and they told me either the LED bulbs or photo cell was faulty and I needed a new set of clocks, £900 plus coding in plus vat ! Motoworks have second hand clocks for £350 but with much more mileage on them and don't really want to go down that road.
So I took the clocks off and dropped them off at a local electronics repair company who specialise in faulty car / motorcycle electrical problems, they were quietly confident they could repair them.
They found that a bit of water had recently got onto the circuit board so they cleaned it all up, I took it home but still had the fault so I took it back and they thoroughly checked it over (3 days) but could not find any other faults with it.
I can't leave it as it is as the clocks will eventually deplete the battery so I have to disconnect the battery when not using the bike, Can anyone help ? No idea what's causing the lights to stay on permanently and don't know what to try next, can't afford to spend over £1000 on a new set of clocks.
Any help / advice would be much appreachiated.
Paul
Faulty clocks !
Re: Faulty clocks !
Did your local dealer plug the bike in and check for a fault code or did they come up with an explanation from what you told them. A second opinion from another dealer might also be worth a try. I have never come across the problem before. That dash is very reliable.
Re: Faulty clocks !
Don't know if they plugged bike in, mechanic just said he had stripped it down and couldn't fix as he thought the iproblem was due a faulty "photo cell". ! Just cannot understand why or how the backlight can come on without the ignition being on ? Beyond me..
Will try another dealer..
Thanks anyway..
