think it is expected to be ~600 miles on most BMWs, normally they like +/- 100 miles in my experience, Peter

Yes, a nominal 600 miles for the fist service, where the dealer will, amongst other things, change the thinner engine oil for the regular thicker oil. So, it's a good idea to stick to around 600 miles for this first service.

My dealer here in California said anytime before 1000 miles, I did mine at 500, then 3000, every 3000 from their on
It's my understanding that break in oils are no longer used by BMW, in which case your bike came with BMW/Shell 5-40 synethic
FYI i'am now at 5000 miles on my 15 and not a drop of oil used so far

Yes same oil used by factory from new. Changing oil every 3000 miles is unnessessary. It's every 6000 or 12 months whichever comes first.

If you're "feeling flush", more frequent oil & filter changes can only be of benefit to the longevity of an engine,
particularly if you've owned the vehicle from new & intend to keep it for a long time.
On my 2007 RT which used 20W-50 mineral oil at £5 per litre, I changed the oil & filter every 3,000 miles.
Had a mk2 VW Golf GTI, did the oil & filter change every 5,000 miles, (recommended every 10,000), the car did 225,000 miles without any engine work being required.

From riders handbook.
BMW Running-in Check
The BMW running-in check
has to be performed when the vehicle has covered between 500 km and 1200 km.
So thats between 310 - 745 miles.
