2014RTW - transmission oil change - where's the drain & refill plugs

Hi all,
Been looking through the maintenance schedule and have seen that the transmission/gearbox oil should be changed every 40K KM. However I can't find this item in my Haynes manual. I looked at the bike but wanted to confirm where the drain plug and refill holes are.

I think the drain plug is on the left hand side of the engine (when viewed from sitting on the bike) just below and underneath the oil filter(not the engine oil drain plug). Is the refill hole above the oil filter about 8-9".

Do these sound right?

Thanks

Is the engine & transmission/gearbox all one unit on the 2014 RTW, sharing the same oil.

It may well be. I know that most Jap bikes use the same oil for engine and gearbox.

If that is the case I wonder what the drain plug in my first post is for????

Mattye on the LC bikes there is no separate gearbox oil, as David says its a combined engine and gearbox. The only oils to service are engine and final drive.

I looked on ascycles for 2010 and later R1200RT's and found the text below in the schedule -

"23 00 510 Gearbox-oil change (maintenance) Initially after one year, then every two years or every 40,000 km"

:)

This Service Schedule is for an LC GS (K50),  probably the same for an RT (K52),  https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7Tvg7 ... ef=2&pli=1

You need to be aware that the 2013 GS / 2014 RT LC engines are a completely new design of engine. The new engine is not the air/oiled cooled engine thats been water cooled, its completely new. Just checked their website and the 2010 and later R1200RT DOHC refers to K26 model engines. The 2014 LC or RTW engines are model K52.

That refers to K26 models. Yours is a K52. Their website needs updating for the newer engine. Its confusing by listing R1200RT 2010 and later. Should be 2010 -2013/4.

Thanks all for your replies and clarification. Just one question though.

The drain plug below and under the oil filter (near the engine oil drain plug) and the plug about 8-9" above the oil filter. Anyone know what these are?

The one below and under the oil filter have not a clue. I would leave well alone. The one on the side of the engine is for the BMW tool for locking the flywheel at TDC/BDC. Have a look at page 2.10 in your Haynes Manual.

Could they be drain plugs for the water cooling system, http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=11_5284

Drain plugs for cooling system are number 12 and 10 on RealOEM page David has linked too. These are on the cylinder heads underneath. The cylinder head is the only part that is water-cooled. The plug Mattye is referring to is under the engine behind the oil filter. Who knows what this is for but its not a maintenance item so I would leave well alone.

That RealOEM diagram is not very clear because bolt 12 looks like its under the engine, in fact its under the right hand cylinder head. Number 9 is the TDC/BTC bolt.

Cheers all for the replies. I'll leave them alone and just do the maintenance as per schedules.

Takes longer to remove plastic fairing around oil filter, than it does to change the oil and filter, since BMW has also relocated the final drive drain and filler on the LC bikes no reason not to change this oil at each service
Now if reinstalling fairing around filter would only go snoothly
