Timing bolt replacement...

My timing bolts were annoyingly rusty, which was playing havoc with my OCD..

So today, I swopped them for new ones. BMW only charge £27.94 for 12 bolts!!!!!!

I'd like to replace the original (now corroded after 3 years) Timing Cover Screws & Washers on my 2012 Twin Cam RT.

The BMW Part No. is 07 12 9 905 537 & they cost £2.33 each x 12 = £27.96.



A trip to Hawk Fasteners in Middlesbrough came up with some Stainless Steel M6 x 30 Socket Head Cap Screws & Washers (12 off) for £6.21.

Yes, I could easily have got them cheaper, but I've had problems before with inferior quality steel.


I'm not saying yours are, but I wanted to be sure.


It was made even worse because BMW transposed the part number I gave them, and sold me 12 bolts initially for £13.06!!


It's been an expensive experience!

A2 Stainless Steel is not the same grade or quality as A4, but still better than BMW OE.
I was initially offered some A2 Screws but the finish on the heads was poor, (could have been a faulty batch).
The guy in the store suggested using A4 at twice the cost.

Maybe there is a clue in the fact that the ones you have just bought are more than likely the same as the rusty old ones you've just replaced.
