Approved Tyres for 2013 R1200 Anniversary Edition

Post by mack62 »

Is there a BMW link to get the approved tyres for each model year?

I just noticed that the rear tyre on my RT is 190/55/17 ZR (Bridgestone Batltax BT023) not the 180 width that is mentioned in the manual.  It was bought used from someone who bought it as a BMW certified used bike the year before.  I am surprised that the ESA is fine with this.  The front seems to be the standard size.  I am now questioning if the usual pressure recommendations apply.  This tyre gives me a 75W load rating.  Any thoughts?

Definitely the wrong width and possibly best replaced.  Put the bike on its centre stand and check there is plenty of clearance everywhere.  Not sure where you will find a list but if you decide to change it and the front one is still in good condition match the back one to it.

I have put about 1500 miles (2 up and solo) on it since buying it and no problems. No clearance issues.  I am planning to switch to PR 4's after this trip as I ride all season in the UK and liked the PR3's I had on my last RT.  They are really good on wet/cold roads.  The guy I bought it from took it to Morocco the previous year.  Perhaps he had to replace it on the tour and the right size was not available.  I am a little puzzled as it was serviced (12k) at an authorized BMW dealer just before I bought it.  No mention of anything on the service record.  So strange that I only noticed it now.

Looking for wrong sized tyres wouldn't be on their check list, just wear and pressures so can understand it being missed. Wouldn't think its very noticeable though.

If no clearance issue and same diameter, I would use it till time for change
As a note when I had my 1600 I changed tires before each long trip, which meant I often changed at 4-6 thousand miles with 2-3 thousand left on the tread(don't like suprises enroute). My FJR buddy happily took these tires and got many more miles out of them, these were 190 tires and his FJR called for 180 never a issue
PS you will be very happy with the new PR4's

A light has just gone on.  When I test drove this bike, I was surprised how stiff it felt compared to my 1150RT.  Even on comfort it is harsh compared to my old RT.  This tyre I have now is meant for the K1600.  That said, it looks pretty boss.  ;)  When I get back I will change it out for the 180/55.  I am guessing that the ride will be less harsh.

Hi sorry, I know its an old thread. 190 section should only go on a 6" rim, ours is a 5.5" so should be a 180 maximum.
63 plate Camhead RT SE with NAV 5, 22l topbox, rear panniers with flat lids, RTP cooling fan, LED side lights, headlight protector, grip puppies, RTP engine bars. Stage 1 remap, sport end can, last of the air/oil cooled RT model.

@Cornish_Camhead
I plan to move back to 180 tyre in the Spring.  The existing tyre does fit but is fairly tight to the exhaust.  More then anything I think it is too stiff for the suspension.

Helped by a nail in my rear tyre, finally made the switch to PR4s.  They are still very slippery but the ride is immediately better.  Looking forward to get them scrubbed in.  :)
