Hi all,

I have noticed what appears to be a leak at he joint between the exhaust pipe and the back box on my 2013 R1200RT

How common is this as a fault and how easy to fix please?

Thanks

Mike

I assume you mean where the end can connects to the exhaust pipe.  There is one large clamp on the joint.  As it's normal to remove the end can to remove the rear wheel it's probably just not been clamped up,enough.

I have two clamps - one either side of a plastic box which I assume is the 'flap'
It seems to be leaking on both sides of the joint so goodness knows what's been going on there.
Strip down job tomorrow by the sounds of it which sounds quite straightforward then if there are no gaskets on other trickery to watch out for>
Thanks

The exhaust flap valve has clamp alignment marks on it.

The clamps are marked for GS or RT, they need to be aligned with the mark for RT fitment.

Clean all the mating surfaces & re-assemble using high-temperature grease e.g. Copper Slip.
Ensure that the flap valve is pushed up the exhaust pipe to the shoulder & likewise with the silencer.
The clamps also need to be as far forward to the shoulder as they will go.
The torque setting for the clamp bolt is 28 Nm.

If the clamp is thought to be the problem, heavy duty exhaust clamps are available from Stig Fasteners in Darlington.

The clamp band is 20mm wide & appears to be continuous, unlike the BMW ones.

Is there a gasket of any sort to fit between the two ends of the respective pipes?

a light smear of silicone sealer on assembly is good for sealing exhaust joints without gaskets.
