Need help / suggestions

I'm taking a Europe tour end of Aug and will be riding a '16 or '17 RT1200. I want to mount my Garmin 276cx with a RAM mount and the tour operator / bike rental outfit will let me mount the unit to their bike, just can't damage anything. That shouldn't be too hard, I'm looking for something that will be easy on / off everyday and won't mar up the bike. Preferably a RAM ball mount. I already have the Garmin mount attached to a RAM arm, just need some kind of 1' ball base to mount somewhere on the RT. I was looking at a RAM mount that will mount to the clutch / brake lever but it appears they don't make one for the RT. So I'm considering a reservoir cover base.

Thought I'd see if those here with RT's might have some suggestions I could use. Any help is, of course, mucho appreciated.

Don't know about RAM mounts on an LC but that Sat Nav looks the same design as a BMW Navigator I.  Thay came out in 1999 and if they got within 100 yards of a tree they lost the satellites.  Full European mapping for that is going to be fun.  If your on an organised tour you might be better off following the  bike in front.

Mounting things on the LC is definitely a challenge (I have recently been trying to find somewhere to fit a GoPro mount onto mine so I sympathise with the problem). RAM do a handlebar mount but there isn't much to mount it on given the design of the bars. Your best option may be to get a suction mount and fit that on the back of the screen. Far from ideal I know, and I don't know whether the vibration would make it unreadable.

The only other option I can think of would be to use 3M VHB tape to temporarily bond something to the bike somewhere - RAM do a square base with a ball on it. The tape is pretty solid when it's in place but can be removed (I use a plastic trim tool) without damaging what it's attached to if you are careful. Still not entirely sure where you could stick it - perhaps to the lid of one of the cubby holes, but you have to watch the swing of the bars in that case as at full lock they might foul your fitting.

Good luck with finding a solution.

Remove one of the handlebar bolts, and replace it with a bolt that has a ram ball on the end. Just make sure you put the bolt back in, before his return the bike!

There is a ram mount for middle of headstock

you pop off the BMW badge, slot it in and tighten, then at the end take it off and pop the BMW badge back in.

Borrow a Nav V or 660, if the bike is fitted for Nav, a lot easier.

Great advice right there.  A 660 can be had pretty cheap.

Or ask if the outfitter will rent you a GPS?  Not sure if that is something done or not?  If so it would have the map set you need and probably up to date.

Have great fun on your trip.

Thanks for all the replies! In regards to those suggesting I use another Nav, or use the tours.... I have my own. A Garmin  276cx that I want to use. We're doing a week of car, and then the bike tour. Maps are all loaded onto the 276 and I'd like to have the tracks for the bike tour days. I'm familiar with it's operation, it's Bluetooth is connected to my headset, yadda, yadda.

I'm wanting a Ram ball mount solution as I have a Garmin mount for this unit and it's set up on a Ram arm / ball. Looking for mounting place / suggestions that others have used. Thanks for all the input, please keep it coming. Like the idea of the center mount, maybe the handle bar end mount.

Try cutting and pasting into another window, if I follow from the forum by clicking on it, it gives the unsecure connection in firefox.

You need to remove the "s" in https:
Seems this software automatically puts the https: even when the address is http:
Copy the address, then paste it in another browser tab, then remove the "s".
Works every time for me.

I really like that mount. The 276cx is a rather big unit and fitting it between the bars would be perfect. I like that mount. Thank you! The link works using Littlebriar's remove the "S" suggestion.
Now, just to be clear... the 16 /17 RT models are the LC models?
Looking this over though, your description is pop the badge off and insert it into the slot. Does this mount screw down into the head? Just push in like a stem stand? I'm a little foggy on how this is actually secured into the head set?
Thanks for the input!

When you say "slot it in" do you mean it screws in? I've looked at this mount and like it, there just isn't a lot of info as to how it actually secures into the stem tube. Anyone know more about this product?

Thanks

Hi

You slot it in at an angle as it has a grommet and washer that you push into the stem and then tighten it up
