Not trying to stur the pot 'much'. Looking seriously about putting a car tire on the rear
Goodrich G Force 205/50 17 XL . Who else here is running one ?

Why would you want to put a car tyre on the back. Aren't car tyres made of different compounds and designed to not tilt over onto the side walls? Guess if you go in a straight line all the time, it would be ok  8)

If you've done 11,000 miles in 11 days, a car tyre might suit you very well.

Works great on a trike though but even wider 225/50 15
No way is a bike going anywhere with that fitted but straight.

Look close and there is something under the panniers.  Maybe there's something else bolted on the side of it as well.  Then it would work.

Would be very interesting in how this changes the ride characteristics.  It would probably work great if you are traveling straight on interstates mainly, but I'd really worry about how the lean angle is affected.  That tire wasn't designed to roll up onto its sidewall in the turns.

Seen quite a few of the "Cruiser" guys go with "car" tyre's for longevity in the states, The roads don't seem as twisty as over here in the UK so they probably work quite well.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Cornering can be interesting enough without fitting a tyre which is clearly unsuitable for a (solo) R1200RT.
Your bike, your money, your life, so your choice, but I can't help wondering about the choice of subject ("well maybe I am") - mad maybe ??

I am sure the OP's question is aimed only at our American board members.


Fitting an automobile tyre would be illegal in Europe and would invalidate our insurance.

Speaking as one American, the idea sounds insane to me.  There is a movement around it over here, mainly by folks riding big, luxury touring bikes.  They call them the Dark Siders.  Here's a link about it, there are many more if you google it.

In the old days when I started, they all had squarish profiles, unfortunately it does mean if you lent it over on to the sidewall you invariably ended up on the deck. Only did it twice before I learnt not to, slow learner.

Yeh know the issue, when I started tyres were solid  :whistle:

I watched the clip of the bloke with a car tyre on his bike,https://ridermagazine.com/2016/05/20/ta ... torcycles/ when that bike leans the tyre is definitely not deforming as it should.
It looks like a really quick way to get yourself into the Darwin awards.
