Showing the finished modification to provide Sat Nav locking on my R1200RT Iconic.

Additional information on how I did this.
Sorry but I can't do a how to video as it will require taking the bike apart again but this should give you an idea of how I did it.

I don't suggest you try this yourself unless you are comfortable using tools and prepared to replace the parts should it not go to plan. Of course I can't take responsibility for anyone messing up their bike so if in doubt don't do it.

The cam lock I used was bought from Ironmongery Direct here:

I drilled a 10mm hole in the top of the plastic GPS cowl using a brad point bit, then used pieces of dowel with sand paper taped to it to widen it to 17mm.
The cam lock is asymmetrical so I then used a herdim rasp to shape the hole to fit the lock. This took about an hour.

I then had to cut a hole in the front cowl plastic (I used a 4mm brad point bit and then a sharp scalpel) to give the cam lock space to move in to block the GPS from being ejected.
There are a couple of bits of plastic in the top cowl that need to be taken out to give it space to move....."

Nicest and cleanest solution I have seen to date.


However if a thief wants it a screwdriver will pry the top plastic up and the GPS will pop right out.  BMW needs to come up with a better solution or integration so it can not be removed by simply prying up on a piece of plastic.

I fitted the Old Timers kit which really is the "nicest and cleanest" solution as it locks the Nav V via the bike's central locking. No extra keys or additional action needed when parking the bike.

But I have to agree that BMW need to come with something better for the next version of the RT
