BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

Hello  everyone totally new to this forum.
Would like to know from someone in the know if a high mileage R 1200 RT  would be worth buying.
By high mileage I mean over 100,000klm.
I have the opportunity to purchase a BMW at a low price which has consistent servicing performed and with over 100,000klm and wondering what to look for.
High long do the motors last?
I have heard many different comments relating to longevity.
Obviously consistent servicing would be a high priority.
Anyway any help, advice or comment would be greatly appreciated.
One other question, how hard are these motorcycles to hold up?

Why bother buying the high mileage bike. There are many low(er) mileage bikes that come along for not too much money.


You may be have to consider a clutch change just around the corner. That in itself is a pretty penny.
With every mile, components wear. Now, the BMW does go on for ever, but there is a price tag attached.


My advice is look for a bike that has about half the number of miles on it.

I can see that you are from Australia, where I presume high mileages on long-straight roads are the norm.


The motors will last forever if they are regularly serviced. Things like clutches, suspension units and final drive units are prone to wear and tear as they are less frequently replaced.

Sounds like an ex police bike Chummy?

i have a 2009 R1200RT with 98k+ km on the clock and my 'friendly' BMW service agent tells me that I will need a new back brake disc, due to wear, next service (approx €500) so check the service history for all the big items and when replaced. Regards.

€100 part - so €400 labour to fit it (30 - 45 mins max) is ridiculous!

To be honest it's a pretty easy job to change the rear disk yourself and can be done with a fairly basic toolkit.The only thing I found is buying a set of long allen key sockets with the ball style end made the job much simpler.
