R1200RT Footpegs

OK, newbie here, advanced apologies if I missed an earlier thread when I searched or in some way I'm outside of correct forum behavior.


So, I got my 2018 R1200RT in January and have now done a couple of rides (5K miles), my strong dislike of the stock foot pegs has not changed. The RT is my 27th motorcycle over the last half century, I've never had a problem like this before.


I don't need to lower then like so many threads I found. My problem is the rubber isn't attached to the metal peg by anything stronger than hope and the weak, flexible piece of plastic on the inboard side of the peg. As a result the rubber rotates around the peg when I ride. I've tried glue, it slows the rotation but doesn't stop it.


Can anybody suggest an alternative peg that will fit on the bike with minimal work? It is kind of sad that my Harley (2009 XR1200) has both a better automatic turn signal cancelation system and better foot pegs. The RT does get a few points back for being a much better motorcycle overall but still...  :))

Blaine, while I have no help for your footpegs, I too noticed that same thing with my 2018 (3K).  It was even more noticeable with the lowered foot pegs.  And even more weird, I am trying to sell my Electra Glide to get a XR1200!!

I can only offer the obvious, inelegant fix:  a zip tie or two.  Sounds like it's the outboard end that rotating loose, so at least one tie at the outside might help.  The ribbing on the rubber should prevent the tie from slipping laterally.  Downside may be a slight slipperiness of the ties, so maybe roughen them with some sandpaper? 


I'm going cross-countries (Frisco to Quebec, back thru Canada), so you've given me the idea for this preventive measure.  One less thing to go wrong. 


BTW, and I don't know if this is a "breakaway" design feature, but my left driver's peg snapped like a piece of celery when the bike rather gently took a static fall.  Looked like cheap pot metal aluminum.  On a tour one up,  in a pinch you can replace it with the rear peg, BTW.  I popped out the return spring on my pegs so you can fold them up - great when backing up since your shins don't hit the pegs, and you legs can go straight down, a benefit to those who find the bike a bit tippy-tall.  I figure the next time it falls over, the pegs may be saved when they fold up.

Have they changed the design of the foot pegs since the 2014 model. I have just popped into the garage to see what your problem is and I cannot rotate my rubber on the pegs. Never had a problem with them. Maybe you could post a few pics.

I have a 2016 RT, and do not have the problem either.  I cannot twist the rubber at all, it's very much stuck in position.

Just cleaned mine and checked mine my2017 can't move them at all.

If its a 2018 model problem it begs the question can you retro-fit earlier model pegs. If you can problem solved.

I have experienced this problem on my '17.
It is especially noticeable on the pillion pegs.

'66 plate here. MY17. Not had any problems on either set of footrests...

At least I know my wife hasn't been on the back of your bike .....


She has managed to twist the left pillion footrest rubber on my 2010, my 2013 and my '66 plate 2017MY, so if someone has a practical fix for this issue I'd be interested !

Had problems with SWMBO twisting the rubber on the rear nearside pegs, just had to put up with it.
No p[roblems at all with my 2014 and 2018 front peg rubber.

I fitted the wider more aero foil shaped pillion footpegs from the K16 GTL.  Fixed the issue if rubber twisting and looks more attractive too.

Just seen this thread after returning from holiday where my wife has also found the rubber twists as she gets on the bike.  Whilst I guess the best solution is indeed to replace the pegs entirely (k1600gtl ones look like a good choice), did anybody get further with other solutions, i.e. cable ties etc., before I embark on some testing of my own?
