Prepare for a shock....

On my otherwise immaculate 2012, I popped out the BMW badge from the shiny headstock today, and what a horror lurks beneath..
The top bearing has severely rusted. So much so, that half of the hole was filled with loose rust. :wonder:
I've hoovered out the rust and greased the bearing for the time being, but will be replacing the bearing ASAP.
Anyone else checked theirs?

Just checked mine, Not as bad as your's John & I can't feel any roughness in the steering action so I'll just give a coat of grease and leave it at that. I think most of the rust and crap comes from the centre part so it shouldn't interfere with the actual bearing unless you remove the seal and get crap in there.
Just for clarification. Johns headstock bearing.

Interesting - thanks Simbo.
One of the guys on the RT Facebook page was suggesting removal of the dust seal was a good idea to grease inside, but I didn't think so, so have done exactly as you have.

Ha! been there and done that!
A 'mere' €206 to replace the top steering yoke bearing badly worn with excessive play. Then again there is 98,000 km on the clock and I was going to France for 8 days.

This thread got me off my chair to grab a screwdriver and pop the black plastic cover (sadly no roundel cover on my model year) on my '08 to inspect. Did so and it looked fine, no signs of rust like reported here. There is a little, but not so bad. Wonder if the roundel does not seal well and let's moisture in, compared to old style cover?

All is well with my 2016 after 2years of riding. Thought I would spray some ACF50 in there. The badge seems to seal ok.
