BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

I just got a 2012 R1200RT.
Attached to the inside of the small storage compartment lid there is a small round clip. I have no idea what this is for? it's not even indicated in the owners manual.
Any ideas? It's really in the way when reaching in there.

Oh, I thought it was solely for raking your arm whilst trying to extract something from the impossibly narrow and deep compartment!!  I wound up stuffing some stiff foam rubber in it.  It affords space under it for little-used items, and it tamps them down nicely so they don't rattle over the bumps.  I cut it to leave a shallower area on top for other stuff.  You can easily pull up the foam to access underneath it.

It is for holding the toolkit, which on a 2012 RT is just a screwdriver with reversible blade, one end Philips and the other a flat blade.  The PO must have kept it as a souvenir!

I've had three air-cooled cooled RTs,  two of them bought new, and none had anything in that clip.
It's great for tearing the skin on the back of your hand though .....

My 05 has the original maglite torch that still works.

At least it has a storage compartment...That's more can be said of your '17RT!

I was thinking of carefully sawing the darn thing off, since it really does make a great knuckle-buster. I stow my tools elsewhere and my light is too big to fit on it anyway.

Is there some way to convert the left-side space for the radio into a storage compartment?  Maybe after-market?  Seems a waste of space (a phrase my ex-girlfriends have used about me).  I was surprised at the lack of fairing storage compartments for a machine made for touring.

After removing the skin off the back of my hand and knuckles multiple times, I cut it off flush with a dremel tool.  Never regretted it.  '08 RT

I've been told (or read someplace) that it was to hold early versions (which are much smaller than today's models) of the Iphone and that the other side of the phone would go into the slot in the foam in the bottom of the compartment.
