I run full synthetic, but the specially formulated 15/50 BMW oil is $16 US a PINT, and I can't find that oil anywhere else. Anybody know if other synthetics will work for temperate weather conditions (San Francisco area)? Thought I could find 20/50, but couldn't. How about 5/30? Thanks.

What ever oil you decide to use just make sure that it meets or exceeds the factory specs. I don't believe that 5w30 does.

Found 15/50 at Walmart for $26 for five quarts.

What are the API and JASO ratings? Does it meet BMW's required specs?

I use Castrol 4T synthetic. Here's a case of 6 quarts for about $50. It's 10w50, but should be fine for your bike.

Cyclegear and amazon have castrol T4 10-50 on sale quite often
Buy a couple six-packs, you should be good for 3 oil changes

In 2009, during the ownership of my 2007 Hexhead, the BMW recommended oil changed from 20w-50 mineral to 10w-50 fully synthetic.
I now use the Castrol 4T 10w-50 in my 2012 Twincam RT.
Now of course, BMW have decided to change the spec. to 15w-50 for Hexheads & Twincams.
