Recommended tyres enquiry – RT1250.

Post by Tony Fyson »

I have completed over 4,600 miles on my new RT 1250, and the rear tyre “white lines” (squirms when crossing a white line at slow speed).
Can anyone recommend suitable replacement tyres for the RT 1250?
Thanks.

What tyres are currently fitted to the bike?

How many miles on them?
Mine became dreadful at about 4000 miles.
I migrated to Metz Z8's and made great improvements (still not brilliant). There are some folk raving over Continentals at higher mileages.

To be fair i think the bike would  have stood  up on its own when i changed them at 5400 but they did give me confidence in them,What mileage are they getting from the Conti's?

Cannot comment on the new 1250 but i have done 8500 mile on my original tyres on my 2018 RTLE and as yet they still look good , 4500 mile seems very low to be changing tyres .

On my Wethead, I have never got more than 6000 useable miles on a rear tyre. The bike feels too dangerous as it tries to follow every tar trail, overbanding, white line and road irregularity.

I'm only getting around 6k as well, tread left, but not handling correctly. I work on the theory, tyres are not that expensive, so I'd rather have them working correctly rather than save a few bob.

For me, that 6K limit is on Michelin PR3, PR4, Metzeler Z8, Metzler roadtec 01.

And Casbar, that too is my philosophy. I bought this bike to enjoy motorcycling. If the handling becomes wayward, I am not enjoying it and they get changed.

However, that still doesn't really explain why the tyres last so little and the handling becomes dreadful. My 1150RT would get a LOT more usable and fun miles out of the tyres and they never made the bike feel dangerous like they do on this Wethead. I used to ride my 1150 a lot harder than the 1200, so it's short tyre life is somewhat confusing.
