Greetings all- new member and my first post as well:


I wanted something better than the stubby tool BMW gives you for the oil filler cap. Being W-A-Y over the top as far as DIYing goes, I designed my own and 3D printed copies for my toolbox and bike kit.

2005 R1200RT

PeterL,  Clever stuff.  This looks like the tool for the 2005-09 bikes, right (although my used 2009 came with the torx head[size=78%]).  I actually preferred my '05 oil cap, and switched it with my '09 cap, cuz in a pinch you can tap the cap off with a screwdriver, whereas if you're without your torx
wrench UR screwed.  Perhaps you should suggest such a switch and make that a selling point.  Also, your link's page doesn't indicate which model years it works on.  Now just invent a tool that helps replace the headlight bulbs!  You'll be a millionaire.[/size]

Noted, I made a change to the text explaining the difference. Kinda hard to visibly confuse these with a TORX though...


Headlights? Don't get me started. I just know I would run afoul of a profanity filter somewhere along the line.

PeterL,  I've always needed a profanity filter!  Got one? 

When I first read this thread I must say I was confused. "The stubby tool that is WAY over the top for DIYing" had me puzzled as both my RT's came with a BMW supplied very neat little plastic tool which does not require any other extension or lever wrench to operate. It weighs next to nothing, takes up very little room in the tool roll and can be used with one hand. Then I noticed that Peter's bike is a 2005 model which I am not too familiar with. Does the 2005 RT have a different Oil Filler cap to the later model RT's ?.

The oil filler cap is the same for Hexheads & Camheads.

Perhaps it's because on a Hexhead, the oil filler cap is on the LHS, same as the level checking window. Whereas, on a Camhead, the oil filler cap is on the RHS.
After topping up, the latter gives you the opportunity to walk around the bike whilst the oil is draining into the sump before checking the level.

I didn't mean to sound 'critical', except in that I thought BMW's tool could be improved upon. And folks who managed to lose/break theirs might want an alternative to paying BMW prices for a replacement. Also, having a spare to keep in my toolbox, rather than digging under the seat if I needed to top up the oil was also in my thought process. Whatever. It's just another option for those who want one.
