BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

Hi all, new to the forum & new to the R1200, previously owned a number of R & K bikes. Can anyone give some advice please, I have to change a defective left switch pack on my 2012 bike. Question is where does the long wiring loom and multi plug which is Integral with the switch locate? Is this under the fuel tank or the left side panel ? The Haines manual appear not to mention this loom and plug !

From what I can see in the Camhead Haynes manual (7.23),  the wiring connectors are within the switch itself and can be disconnected without tracing the wires any further.



Cover #4 needs to be removed to access the connectors, then rotate the switch assembly to disconnect the connectors.

Could be similar to this one from a K1600.

Thanks for your reply I have double checked the switch pack and the wiring loom as discussed is definitely integral with the switch pack. Bit of a mystery really

I have had both Left and Right Switches changed by a dealer on a 2013 Twincam. Although this was some time ago I recall that the technician removed the fuel tank. (I popped my head into the shop to check on progress and noticed the removed tank). Unfortunately, the replacement left switch was faulty straight out of the box and my old switch had to be re-fitted to get me home whilst a another was ordered. These switches are not reliable.

This also goes to show that the Haynes manuals are not always reliable either. You can't beat field testing by someone who's had it done before.

I too have had both the L & R switches changed on my 2012 Camhead. One in Germany & one in the UK but both behind the closed doors of a BMW dealer's workshop.

If it's of any interest, I've found some photos of the switch internals on a K1600, they are likely to be similar to those fitted to an R1200RT, it's no wonder they break.


The white wire is a repair.


This is a new replacement version where they use loosely attached flexible circuit strips rather than the copper traces embedded in the plastic frame.

Tank removal is straight forward. As long as you remember to have it nearly empty to keep the weight down. A plus point is that all the connections, Fuel and Electrics are very easily accessible on the top of the tank. My previous bike, a Triumph Sprint was a nightmare with Fuel and Electrics well hidden underneath and very awkward to get at. There again, the Triumph switch clusters are class compared to the BMW rubbish.

Perhaps so...but you will never need this while working on a non-British bike (or auto):
