BMW Service Intervals

Having just read an interesting piece about the 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 Engine which for next year drops the Ducati Desmodromic Valve actuation in favour of more traditional Valve Springs I am astounded by the Service Intervals. Ducati list the Valve Check and Adjust as a 60,000 km requirement, that's 37,000 miles and an Engine Oil change at 9000 miles or 2 years. I have always thought that the BMW Valve Check every 6000 is a bit over the top (especially on the Twincam Engine) so perhaps as well as offering us such luxuries as See round the Corner Headlights and TV sized info screens they could see about extending some of the the 6000 Service items and reducing maintenance costs.

Valve check every 6000 miles ... ?? are you SURE that's what BMW require  ???

The valve clearance checks on a Hexhead or Camhead are every 6,000 miles, on a Wethead, Shifthead or Ledhead they are 12,000 miles.

Sounds very tempting to take a look at a Ducati if it is correct .

Who knows.......Audi might encourage Ducati to adopt shaft drive?  Then we might be tempted :) .


Ducati dealers will of course be delighted as their service revenues are chopped in half from future MS owners.

Just like car dealers had to accept years ago when Hydraulic Tappets where introduced into most car engines. I can’t remember the last time I had a car which required valve clearance checks. Which of course brings the question, why don’t bikes have hydraulic tappets. Is it a question of high RPM or space limitations ? .
