I remember when filling stations took care to provide level ground so you got an accurate oil level reading.  Damned if I can find one today.  One axis is always off, perhaps to facilitate water runoff.  Frustrating.


The best I can do is position the bike 90 degrees to the grade.  I figure this minimizes any lateral lean, and simply rotates the oil level in the sight glass.  My question is: Since I think that the level should optimally be taken on flat ground with rear tire off the ground,  if the nose is on the upper side of the slope will I still get an accurate reading?  Sometimes the pitch makes the rear tire hit the ground.  My thought is that if it's anything short of the optimal position,  any internal machinery would either displace or free up oil space, yielding a false reading of more or less oil.

There is almost 1L between the minimum and the maximum oil levels  a small slope is not going to make that much difference

The difference between MIN and MAX is 0.5 l.

2014 LC bike the handbook quotes 0.95 litres between Min and Max.

I believe that the Hexhead and Camhead are both the same, 0.5 l between Min and Max.

Am I the only one wondering why the op doesn't just find a bit of level ground,its not rocket science.

Burridge,  As I said, it is hard to find nowadays, unless you carry around a leveling glass.  I guess a covered parking garage would be good if you want to pay each time you change your oil.  Maybe you should be a bit more level-headed and keep the discussion on the forum more civilized. It's not rocket science (nor is proper spelling - note the use of the apostrophe).

You used to take your bike to a filling station to change the oil?

BoB,  Don't have a level parking area, I live in the hills, and they used to be reliably level so you could check your oil level while filling up, or even add a little next time you went for fuel.  If there's even a slight lateral incline it gives a really inaccurate reading, that's why I point the bike up any noticeable incline.

Is it not possible to fabricate a stand for where you normally park.

There is a tolerance so any ground that's nearly level its not  going to make that much difference.

Find bit of ground where you can get both wheels at the same level, This will mean the bike will be across the incline.


Get friend to hold bike vertically.


Check oil


Stop worrying about it
