New member and question.

Hi everyone!
I have just bought my first BMW, an Rt 1200 from 2010.
The BMW dealer I bought it from said that they need to replace the steering bearing before I can go and pick it up.
The bike has 78000 kms on the clock.
Is this a known problem?
I was told when I bought it that it was in good order.
I bought the bike to go to Nordkaap with my wife in June from the Italian Alps where I live.
Regards,
Simon

Welcome! I have a ‘12 R1200R, so basically the same bike under the skin. I’ve not heard that steering bearings are a common issue on these bikes, but with the mileage on yours, it certainly couldn’t hurt to follow your dealer’s advice and get it sorted before you take delivery.

I've had three R1200RT's, 2007, 2010 & 2012, with the same steering bearing, all bikes covered 38,000 miles without any problems.

I would say top marks to your dealer for carrying out what would appear to be a thorough pre-delivery check. It would be most unusual here in the UK for a bike of that mileage to be sold through the BMW Dealer Network. Such bikes (However Nice The Are) would normally be "Traded On" through Used Bike Dealers.
Nothing to worry about.

Found this thread on ukGSer, Steering bearing removal 1200 GSA '08 (ukgser.com) might be of interest and useful for future reference.
