As soon as I bought the bike about 1k ago I trimmed a wee bit of conveyor belting to fasten at the bottom of the engine front guard so that it hung down between the spoilers to protect the sump from the worst of the road crud. The bike had done only just over 5k when I got it and the sump already had about 7-10mm of crusted crud on almost every facet.
What you see in one picture is the sump after about 1k on our Cairngorm road system. Not bad and as you see in the other photo - it's the catcher that's getting the grief. I haven't cleaned the sump since that first time.
I might yet make the catcher a bit wider/deeper.

Sorry - just noticed the sump and bike photos are upside down (honest it's the photos not the bike)!

Good idea, is that with or without a fender extender fitted.

It's with the Avant extender fitted.

Got one on my Camhead but the sump still gets pitted, however it saves the front engine cover. Nowhere to fit an extra flap. I'll have to get some Hammerite.

Aye, the extender does a wee bit to help the front of the engine but not much to protect the sump/headers - seems they concentrate only on taking care of what can be seen while standing up rather than what actually needs looking after!

The headers and balance pipe are higher up on a Camhead. The sump and underside of the bike get washed every time it's done. Doesn't stop the stone chips though. Will try to keep on top of the paint now it's tidy again.

What thickness is the material that you used? The only stuff I can find on Ebay is 6mm thick, I’m a bit concerned that it would be too heavy.

I recently had my suspension replaced at T-Tech and Lucas pointed out that there is point of vulnerability on the rear suspension lower mount being in direct line for debris and wet. The mount then seizes, and that can cause the shaft to snap. He suggested that it may be possible to protect the mount somehow, perhaps with a smaller piece of your material?

Just mic'd it at 1.25mm thick. It's conveyor belt material and seems to be resilient rubber topside with a woven rayon backing.
It's really quite stiff - I made a couple of boot shields for the Pan '13 that I'm selling.
Since I noted how dirty the lower mount was at the back I've been wondering about protecting it. I've got a fair bit left so I might have a go.

This would give somewhere to attach an extra flap.
