My exhaust flapper valve seized and a warning light has appeared on my dash. Headers were replaced under warranty last time it happened, but now its out of warranty BMW dont want to know unless I have £1600 to give them. Had a problem getting some of the screws out due to the restricted space and found this on Amazon

for £17. Money well spent and flapper valve now working, until the next time. Anyone have any idea if the flapper can be removed? How easy is it to do? And will it effect any future MOT due to its emmissions? Many thanks

Not sure about removing it but it won't affect the mot. When mine went I replaced the whole system with Arrow headers and exhaust. All for a grand and never have to mess with it again
That's a tidy little set for the money, got a link

Can't remember where I read it but the valve is more to do with getting around noise limits than emissions. There is a plug in bit of electrickery that goes under the seat that fools the canbus into not lighting up the fault if you disconnect the servo.

Disconnect the flap leaving it in the fully open position, remove the cables and actuator then fit a servo buddy to prevent the warning light on the dash coming on.

I removed my entire flapper butterfly last year. The pivot still moves in place, but there is just no butterfly to restrict exhaust flow. It had no negative effect on performance. What did happen was that I got some minor popping sounds from time to time when shifting gears.

That sounds a good idea, as it did seem to be the flapper itself rather than the cables sticking. How did to get the flapper out?

I removed the muffler and used an electric die grinder. I was able to get the burr right along the pivot axel. Took about an hour to get it all off. There are probably easier ways.

I noticed these recently, they look fairly well made for the money.
