Hi folks,

New to this site and I am planning a small road trip with two mates from U.K to Holland and onwards to Arnhem and Colditz Castle. Has anyone covered theses areas before? Any advice on recommended guided tours or biker friendly places to stay would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

William. weebiggles.

Did Colditz on me 50th big tour(13 country's in 6 weeks  )
Highly recommended and cheap for the guided tour, and its as you imagine it,although a lot is closed off.More escaped than I thought, shame they never got the plane airborne but they did launch the replica and it cleared the river below.

The German staff block is/was a hostel and you can stay there. We stayed just outside Colditz in an 18th century Inn.What we never new before we got there, it was part of east Germany and the owner Mattias had great stories to tell over breakfast.Did us a bbq one night and charged us peanuts, great host.See if I can did out his details :thumb:

This was probably one of the best places we stayed on the whole trip, great quirky place, great food and a host that couldn't do enough for you, proper old school hospitality.

If you are doing WW2 stuff, you might like to visit Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery and the Airborne Museum, (did it in 2012).

Hi folks,

Thanks for your trip ideas and accommodation suggestions. We are also hopefully going to Stalag Luft 111 at Zagan in Poland where the “great escape” was masterminded. I know most of the camp has been destroyed but there is a small museum we would like to visit.

Both sites are well worth the effort to visit, we went in October of 2018. Because of the time of year we flew to Berlin and hired a car and based ourselves in Zielona Gora in Poland, The drive to Zagan was about two hours from there. You should also visit the Lubuskie Military Museum, an old palace with Polish Migs, tanks and other militaria parked in the grounds. Fantastic place.

Thanks,

We are motorbiking it from Newcastle to Amsterdam, then through Germany and into Poland for Stalag Luft 111 visit. Hopefully the weather will be kind. We want to visit the Mohne Dam, Colditz and Arnhem on the way back. Our itinerary is fluid so we will see how much we can get fitted in during our trip. I will keep you posted on how we got on.

In 2015, we visited all 3 of the Dams targeted by the Dambusters, they are not that far apart. This map shows their locations.

I could dig out some photos or would that spoil your fun.

Thanks David,

No photos would be fine and perhaps your suggestions for a good route to get there.

Fantastic,

Yes I believe the dam with the two towers is the Mohne Dam. Can’t wait to see them in person. Currently running machine in ready for first 600 mile service before we go.

We went from Hull to Rotterdam and did the Mohne and Sorpe Dams on day 1, staying at Arnsberg. Just took what the sat. nav. gave as the fastest route. On day 2, we went from Arnsberg to the Eder Dam as per the route on the map above.

As per the Derwent Reservoir where the Dambusters practiced.

Yes I remember watching a tv program on the Lancaster bomber flying over the Derwent Reservoir at the anniversary a few years back.
