Potential R1200RT Owner

Hi all,

I'm new here and am just looking for some advise...

Currently riding a R1200C Montauk and loving it, however it's getting a-bit long in the tooth. I would love to restore it, mainly cosmetics. However, here in the Algarve getting paintwork, powder coating, chroming etc. done to any degree of quality is impossible.

The more I read about the 1200RT, the more I want one! Looking for a post 2014 liquid cooled.

BUT, I'm only 5'5" with an inside leg of 30" (75cm). The Montauk has a seat height of 790mm and a wet weight of 260 kg and I can just tip-toe the ground and don't have any issues around town or in the garage.

Any smaller riders here with the RT? Do you think it may be too big for me?

In UK I would just find one in a local dealer & try it out - But the nearest one to me here is at the other end of the country!

Big thanks for any input.

Welcome. The R1200RT is quite tall. There is a lot of bike to keep hold of and although I can put the soles of my boots down on both sides I felt I wanted a bit more security ( I am roughly 5’ 11”).

I purchased this lowering set from eBay.

I assumed I could set the eccentric cam rubber grommet to the lowest setting and use the bracket set to low as well. Unfortunately this isn’t possible because there isn’t enough room to allow you to set the seat that low. If you really want an R1200RT I would advise looking to get the foam of the seat reduced as I suspect you may find it a tad to tall.

I'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam and as Jeffem said the RT is quite tall. I can just about flat foot it, another inch lower would be nice but it's not a big deal.

Lower seat is available, but it has very little padding and feels like a plank after 100 miles.
