2018 r1200rt, replaced battery, no power

Post by PlowBoy »

Hello all, I'm new here and hoping for some help. I just replaced the battery in my 2018 rt. Now i have absolutely no power, anywhere. Yes, the battery tests' 12+ volts and is connected correctly. I changed the battery in the key fob twice. I get no continuity between the ground connection and the frame. It sounds like there is a 50 amp fuse somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. I'm thinking the antitheft feature may have something to do with it but the dealer is giving me no information, they want to get the bike in the shop. I did check the 2 small fuses, their ok. No grounding or sparks when i changed the battery out. Any ideas? Thanks so much. I'm getting too old for this.

What happens if you put the original battery back?

With the 50 amp fuse out is there any power to one side of it?

Are the cables from the battery connected correctly both ends, you say there is no continuity between ground and the frame?

This may help but virus check it first.

Is the ground/earth connection from the battery to the frame or engine. I've had read elsewhere that BMW may not use the the frame and the earth is connected to the engine.

Gentlemen, I have power on both sides of the 50 amp fuse, the 2 small fuses, and power to the protected lug on the frame near the battery. From what I've been told, the frame is not grounded. The mystery is why things worked before pulling the battery. It was out for about 3 days before i got it back in. I still think it has something to do with the alarm system or the "immobilizer". 2 service departments have not been of much use ("we have to see the bike") Thanks for the information.

Hi.
Dint want to sound stupid bit have you slid the battery back out fully to see if the earth lead further back has either broken or if there is a single small wire crushed at the back.

Only a suggestion

Well Fellas, I'm really embarrassed to have to admit this, I did indeed hook the wires up wrong. I went to put everything back before calling the dealer to come get it and could not get the battery back into the encloser. After looking at the picture i took (to prevent this very thing) i still could only see one cable on the (-) terminal. But it wasn't going to fit that way so I crossed my fingers and put the 2 black cables on the ground side. Fired right up, no problems. I should know better but I think the calendar is starting to catch up to me. There it is. Most of the replies were correct, check that you got the wires right. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to try to help.
