Took the bike for it's service today and got talking to the salesman regards a GS.He said he'd have a look at my RT
viewtopic.php?t=8193
in the week(they have it all week)and offer me a price against the used 1250GS when I collect mine.
Now I've never been in this position before and want to go fully armed next Saturday.I will be a cash buyer and was wondering how fair people find Motorad dealers on a trade in bases. My RT is currently for sale on this forum and elsewhere, I've based my price on comparable bikes on Ebay/Biketrader etc.He will offer me the price as the bike stands with all the gubbins on it.Do Motorrad dealer generally play fair or come in low,is there much room to barter, any tips regarding trading in.

In 2014, I was looking at changing my then 2010 Camhead for a new 1200 Wethead. The sales guy gave me a valuation for my potential part ex. I went back and looked at a used 2012 Camhead which I bought and still own. My trade in had a value irrespective of what is was being part ex'ed against. That's the value mate, take it or leave it. It's the cost to change which is the thing to look at. Put the bike back to standard, without the accessories. They won't be reflected in the price difference and you'll probably get more selling them off the bike. You've valued the accessories at 700 GBP, I doubt the dealer will. Without a trade in, you might get some discount on the 1250GS.

I was offered in PX £2500 for my 07. Seeing it's not the best looking and I paid well under £1000, sounded like a good deal. Just didn't want to buy a new bike at the time(may 2023)

Hello. I'm new here but just picked up my new RT this morning. It's filthy now 🤨

I traded my FJR in about 6 weeks ago for a factory order, it turned up yesterday and the sales guy wanted it straight out today for end of quarter and half year targets, so now might not be a good time as its the start of the next quarter, but you never know.

When I got my initial valuation for the FJR, I walked away but thought I'd call in at another dealer closer to home. I was insulted with their offer of £2000 less than the dealer I bought from!

I suppose it depends on each dealers circumstances, maybe the low ball dealer had hit their targets.

My FJR had every extra available on it but was valued as a standard bike. Luckily, I bought it used so I didn't take the hit on the extras.

Food for thought.

Paul

Did you get it from marshalls of Grimsby by any chance?

It's hit and miss, if they have other RTs in stock they will low ball you as they don't really want another, but you can also check if there are any BMW deals available - I got an extra grand on a bike a few years ago as a BMW promotion offering £1000 on top of any trade in on a new bike. You may also want to see if there is any deal on taking the finance, you can usually cancel it in about 4/6 weeks and still keep the deal, I got an extra £1500 for that also

Lastly, shop around, I've bought 3 new bikes in the last 7 years and never from the same place, I live near Wigan and my current RT came from London as they gave me the best deal, I have no loyalty to a dealer who is out to make as much as he can, because I'm out to save as much as I can also ;)

Lastly, Lastly - don't sell it with the extras, as already said, you get nothing for them, remove them and get a few quid on here for them.

Agree with the above. The number they give you will have as much to do with how punchy the price on the 1250 is as it does on your bike.
Accessories and after market stuff is worth nothing - in fact to some it devalues the bike or at least limits its appeal to buyers who want the same stuff on their bike.

I did indeed.
A better experience than a dealer closer to me...

Thanks for the input gents, very much appreciated. The bike will come home next week and be stripped of the accessories and will be put in the forsale section.Of course,if the GS isn't that much of an improved riding position then it's all immaterial :thumb:
