So I’ve pretty much only ever worn leather trousers on the bike ( once I’d stopped wearing jeans!)

Ive gone from 34” waist through 36” and last couple of years a 40” , im fed up with baggy ass and leg syndrome now!. What might be a suitable alternative that are comfy and have a degree of protection ?. I’m not looking to spend a fortune but it’d be great to have something that fits my waist but also my skinny butt and legs .

Buy something that fits the waist and have them taken in.

I've just paid £60 to have my Resurgence jeans taken in by Hideout Leathers (nr. Cambridge). Probably 3x as expensive as the local tailor but I wanted them to use best quality thread.
After all, AAA abrasion resistance is no use if the clothes come apart at the seams

Hideout have just taken in my leather jods (as they were known)
at a cost of £195… I only paid £300 made-to-measure new from Crowtree’s in 1999, but it’s excellent workmanship and at least they fit me now.

I have some made-to-measure leather trousers from Scott Leathers in Barnard Castle. Very good quality and not too expensive (although I've had them a few years now).

To answer your question ,don't think you have much option but textile,and there is plenty to choose from.I find Richa(other makes are available ) do decent gear at an affordable price,never had a quality issue.
Here's a top tip.If you have Sportsbikeshop near you then go on there website,order different makes/sizes(including waist and leg lenth)to try before you buy.No outlay,just pay for something you want.I find it the best way for me as I can order 10+ pairs and something will be the right fit,plus they have the bike frame instore to see how the clothes get pulled about.Best of all(and I can vouch 110% for this)no quibble return/refund policy,bar lids that have had visor stickers removed.
Stick another fewwwwww inches round the waist and you can have all me old Richa Gortex stuff for a steal,unfortunately you're going to have to put a lot more effort into the pie eating-3/10 for effort

Thanks guys for the reply’s, plenty to look into. I’m probably going to look at textile rather than leather this time.

I once tried on some Weise textiles which I couldn't get my legs in to for my size waist (32-34") due to a taper - to fit my legs I ended up with 2XL! Bought em as they were ridiculously cheap and could cinch in at the waist. This was a while back though.

I’ve just been measured up by Hideout for textiles and leathers for work so hoping their kit is good

When I picked up my leathers there was a bloke with his new textiles suit on, and the lady there was checking the leg and sleeve length with him sat on his bike, which gives an indication of just how thorough their fitting service really is…

Prices are about the same as the Klim Kodiac suit £2k+
