Do you think maybe the hose that drains the area around the filler cap to under the bike became disconnected or damaged/cracked, and that led to the gas on the engine?

I know some people won't like it, but since you can't legitimately get them anymore...
I bought one of the bootleg DVDs off eBay for $25. I've used it a couple of times and it's quite good. From what I can tell it's a copy of the disc that BMW used to sell. Only downside is it runs in Windows only ...

I just got a 2007 RT and here's what I'm doing about two of those:

IMO, it's honestly not that critical. If the level is anywhere on the sight glass it's not going to cause any harm to the engine. I get it in there but in the lower half (after a short idle to fill the dry oil filter and drained passages). When the engine gets hot and the thermostat opens up ...
