Daytona boot repair

Post by Steve398 »

I recently had the gearchange pad come partially unstuck on my left hand Roadstar GTX boot. A not infrequent occurrence considering the useage and the fact that the boots are over 25 years old, and are the ‘Triggers broom’ of my bike kit having has 2 sets of soles and 2 pads in the past.
I tried a local cobbler who made a huge mess with superglue which of course cracked up and fell off, it being a very brittle hard adhesive,
So aware that things are now different after Brexit I phoned Tran-Am and were told to deal with The Boot Repair Company who will repair/replace/mend whatever bits are necessary.

So off they went, and less than a week later back they came. TBH I’m not wild about the look of the pads but they’ll hopefully do the job.

Total cost about £83 inc P&P both ways, not an insignificant amount but a whole lot less that £400!

Still cheaper than buying a new pair. I never think of repairing boots. My thinking is that once they wear out, it's time to look for a new pair
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.

That’s a different look Steve but if it’s solid and works that’s all that matters. I’ve been using the Daytonas I picked up on eBay almost new for £130, they are bedding in nicely now.

Back to boot repairs -
The Boot Repair Co gearchange pads are perfectly satisfactory so that’s sorted.
I’ve also recently discovered that Altberg can also resole your Daytona’s, hopefully with a full welded sole. My boots (pictured above) will soon be ready to try Altberg’s repair service out.

Let me know how you get on Steve. My job boots were always Altbergs and I needed a sole replacement on a very comfy pair but I believe they stopped repairing bike boots a while back due to a customer dispute. The current repair offering is for the walking style boots not motorcycle boots.

I spoke to them recently and their response was ‘Send them up, if there’s any problems we’ll contact you.” So hopefully that sounds promising…
